A crowd in Ensenada, recently attended a political rally in support of Jose Lopez Portillo, the presidential candidate of Mexico's PRI party and the only person in the race. The Mexican presidential election will be held Sunday, July 4, when most people are not working in order to allow a high voter turnout." San Diego County has a close relationship with Mexico, and attitudes and politics on each side of the border effect the other. This image is part of the North County Times negatives, an extensive collection of photography documenting North San Diego County, and California and Mexico, from the 1960s to early 2000s. The negatives were shot by Daniel Flores Rios, a photographer for the North County Times. Mr. Flores had standing orders to capture the news, culture, and daily life of north county San Diegans. He was a prolific photographer, capturing over 40,000 events and subjects comprising an estimated 150,000+ individual images. A fraction of these were used for publication in the Times. Mr. Rios donated the copyright for his photographs to California State University, San Marcos. This collection of negatives is possibly the single most comprehensive image documentation of North San Diego County during the time frame of its creation.
